Family holidays on the Costa Brava, Cap de Creus
The post-global pandemic holidays have been coming on strong, and how! This year we have decided to spend 10 days on the Costa Brava, the last week and a half of June , a vacation that has been heavenly and that we have squeezed out every minute, we have visited dozens of coves , paradisiacal beaches , an excursion to the Monastery of Rodes , visit to the Aiguamolls … don’t miss the post, you’re going to love it!
I must say that this has been the second visit to the Costa Brava for my boyfriend and me, about 14/15 years ago at the beginning of our relationship, we came to see the coast of Girona, crossing into the neighboring country of France , it has been very nice to return to remember some of the places that we discovered in its day with our family of 4 , our children.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO TRAVEL TO THE COSTA BRAVA?
First of all, I’m going to make a point that, from my point of view, I consider very important to see and get to know the Costa Brava properly. From my experience, the best time to travel there is June or September . Why? Simply because of the masses of people .

They are very touristy and busy areas and beaches , the quality of the water, its landscapes, its crystal-clear waters, its seabed… it is a natural and clear paradise , it gets packed with people in July and August to the point that there are coves (due to COVID issues) that in these summer months if you don’t go before 9 in the morning you can’t even access them, however, in the months of beginning or end of summer everything looks and is enjoyed INFINITELY better .
In my humble opinion, are you ready to see the first part of our vacation…? Let’s go!
FIRST ACCOMMODATION ON CANYELLES PETITES BEACH, IN ROSES
The first apartment where we stayed for the first 5 days was on the outskirts of Roses , in the southern part of Cap de Creus . Our intention was to get to know the whole of Cap de Creus in depth the first few days, and then go down to Tamariu, Begur, Palamós, San Antonio de Calonge, Calella de Palafrugell , etc.

The apartment was in an incredible area less than 20 meters from the spectacular Canyelles Petites beach , on the outskirts of Roses , during the days we were there it was practically empty (obviously, due to the dates, as I mentioned above), really none of the coves or beaches we visited were full on any day.
INCREDIBLE COVES ON THE COSTA BRAVA IN CAP DE CREUS
Cap de Creus has incredible places , beautiful coves , some of them practically virgin, that preserve the wild state that we lovers of nature and the wild like so much. We went to some of them such as Cala Jóncols, Cala Montjoi, Cala Murtra, Cala Rostella, Cala Tamariua, Cala Boquelles or some of the coves that border the bay of Cadaqués and Portlligat , where the famous house/museum of Salvador Dalí is located .

Being a natural area in Cap de Creus , practically all the coves are made of stones, take some water shoes because they will be your great allies throughout the trip and enjoy the wildest Costa Brava! For me, that was what I liked the most, perhaps because I like the areas less explored and modified by humans, the fact that Cap de Creus preserves that wild and natural state is what makes it unique, don’t you think?
VISIT TO THE AIGUAMOLLS DE L´EMPORDÁ NATURAL PARK
On our first visit to the Costa Brava , a whopping 14-15 years ago, my boyfriend, being a great lover of birds and places with native vegetation , took me to see Aiguamolls , which I remembered as beautiful, but not that much!

Els Aiguamolls are in Castelló D´Empuries , it is a walk (take sneakers) of a few kilometers of wetlands with amazing vegetation and peace, there are viewpoints where you can see birds, you can see horses, storks, and it is very likely that you will come across the odd wild boar or hedgehog, we were not so lucky, but we did see a GIANT lizard of a bright green color that left us all petrified in the middle of the path ha ha ha…
EXCURSION TO THE MONASTERY OF SAN PERE DE RODES, IN THE SIERRA DE RODES
Being in the area for so many days there was time for all kinds of tourism, also for inland tourism to visit the Monastery of San Pere de Rodes , in the Sierra de Rodes , you access it from El Port de la Selva and the visit is highly recommended (regardless of whether you are more or less given to religion), the architecture and the peace that is breathed in the area is brutal, upon payment (6€ adults) you can access the interior of the Monastery and take a tour of its facilities, some of which have been restored.
As a graduate and lover of interior design, I am passionate about architecture and these visits to old buildings and places with centuries of history are my passion, once again we visited a fairly touristy place practically alone, if you choose to do this excursion check schedules, prices and capacities.
CADAQUÉS, PORTLLIGAT AND PORT DE LA SELVA
Visits to the villages in the area are a MUST on our holidays. I love coastal villages ! White houses, with the smell of salt, seafood… I love them! And if there is a town par excellence in Cap de Creus , it is undoubtedly Cadaqués . As well as being one of the most beautiful towns in Spain , it is the famous town that was home to the world-famous painter Salvador Dalí . Cadaqués is one of those towns that captivates you and makes you fall in love for life. This is the second time we have visited it and once again it has captivated me.

Its slopes, its narrow streets, its white houses, its windows, its smell, its people… Salvador Dalí’s house/museum is in Portlligat , a small coastal village of sailors that is like travelling to another time. Visiting Cadaqués and Portlligat is like letting yourself be carried away by its streets and its coves of crystal-clear water.
The day we went to see the Monastery of San Pere de Rodes we stopped in El Port de la Selva where we ate delicious food and took a walk around the town, which we liked a lot too.
As you can see, we got to know Cap de Creus from top to bottom , its coves, its beaches and its towns, and this was only half of the trip, we still had many beautiful places on the Costa Brava to visit with the family…
