FAMILY TRAVEL

Travel to the Basque Country, Bermeo

Traveling to the Basque Country with children or… how to return to Valencia wanting to buy a house on the coast of Bermeo , Zarautz or Zumaia , what a wonder the North! A few days ago I published our experience in San Juan de Gaztelugatxe with children , a must-see if you travel to Bilbao area, in this post we will see the rest of our trip, which was no small feature…

FIRST STOP: BERMEO, MUNDAKA AND URDAIBAI BIOSPHERE RESERVE

Our apartment was right in the center of Bermeo . When booking, I always try to make sure that the place we are going to sleep is on the outskirts (because of the noise and the parking). This time, it wasn’t possible and we stayed right in the center of Bermeo , a fishing village and the world capital of tuna. For us, the most important thing on this trip was that it was well located to get around where we wanted to go, the entire area of the east coast of Bilbao .

Mundaka, Basque Country

We left Valencia in the early morning and arrived in Bermeo just in time for lunch (6 hours and a bit of travel…), blessed are the pintxos of the Basque Country , you know! That’s another level… wherever we went we did pintxo tasting hahaha… We left our stuff in the apartment and took a walk to see the town, then we got in the car and went to see the neighboring town of Mundaka and the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve , where we took a swim on its beach.

SATURRARAN BEACH, ZUMAIA AND ZARAUTZ

This was my favorite, Saturrarán beach , and I was also extremely lucky to see it at low tide , which revealed the charm of this beach, its rocks in the sand simulating sharp knives, brutal…

Saturrarán Beach, Basque Country

There comes a time when you “normalize” the fact of bathing in spectacular beaches with crystal-clear waters, huge waves, surrounded by mountains, green and more green wherever you look, but nothing could be further from the truth. Here, the person in question did not stop appreciating that environment for even a moment. While in the water, she raised her head to look at that landscape and smiled effortlessly at seeing such a place. How wonderful…

Zarautz Beach, Basque Country

That day we had a good drive , we wanted to return to Zarautz being 4, we already knew it on one of our trips when we were still 2. Honestly I didn’t remember it being so full of people, perhaps it was influenced by the fact that it was August and that it is one of the most visited cities in the Basque Country , even when full, the beach in Zarautz is wonderful.

Zumaia, Hermitage of San Telmo, Basque Country

We loved Zumaia, we went up to the Hermitage of San Telmo, so well known for the filming of 8 Basque Surnames and also for having some of the most spectacular views. From the Hermitage of San Telmo you can see the beach where Daenerys Targaryen lands on said beach with her ship to what is her home, Dragonstone .

SAN JUAN DE GAZTELUGATXE

A few days ago I published a post telling about our experience going up to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe with children . I would dare to say that it was what I liked most of the whole holiday (I assure you that choosing when faced with so much beauty is difficult, and a lot!), perhaps because of the surrounding spectaculars, perhaps because of the effort it took (with a brutal reward), perhaps because we were able to enjoy the experience all 4 of us together, perhaps because of the excitement of being in one of the settings of the Game of Thrones series…

BAKIO, LAGA BEACH, MATXITXACO LIGHTHOUSE AND GUERNICA

We took a dip in the beautiful Bakio beach and then visited the Matxitxaco Lighthouse . We were not lucky enough to see any whales, as the area is known for whale crossings. It was not because we were not at the lighthouse for a while when there was a blizzard, and if we had not caught each other we would have flown away…

Matxitxaco Lighthouse, Basque Country

Laga beach is one of the many wonders of the Basque Country. What waters! Completely turquoise and with brutal waves. We had a great time here and spent a large part of the day. The Vikings didn’t want to leave, and the water temperature was perfect, making them not want to leave.

This is the end of our holidays in the Basque Country with children . We have fallen in love with Euskadi , each and every one of its corners is a fantasy, we will definitely be back!!
