FAMILY TRAVEL

Traveling to Menorca with children

…It will be wonderful to travel to Menorca… although the original song said Mallorca this summer 2023 we have packed our backpack and set off to discover the only Balearic island we had yet to visit, Menorca .

It is no secret that I still dream of its waters and beaches. I had heard that Menorca is a place to fall in love, but what I didn’t know was to what extent…

If you are thinking about traveling to the island of Menorca with children , in this post you will see what our experience was like with two Vikings aged 9 and 7. Fasten your seatbelt because… we are taking off towards Mahón airport!

LOGISTICS, RESERVATIONS AND TRAVEL ORGANIZATION

OCD with the organization of our trips? Well, I’m not hiding anything, but when you travel with small children you can’t leave things for the last minute, and if we talk to a crazy organizer like me, we won’t even talk about it…

In January 2023 we already had the plane tickets, yes, you read that right, 6 months in advance! I’m going to make a post about how I organize trips with the Vikings because you can’t imagine the amount of messages I receive through Instagram about this topic, so I’m not going to go into too much detail on this matter, let’s get right into the island of Menorca .

DAY 1: FIRST STOP IN MENORCA, CALA SA MESQUIDA, BINIBECA AND CALA EN PORTER

We arrived at Mahón airport and headed straight with our rental car to what would be our first swim on the island, Cala Sa Mesquida , very close to Mahón , with easy access and parking.

Sa Mesquida Cove, Menorca.

A swim in its crystal-clear waters and our second stop: Binibeca . I dare say that Binibeca is the most famous and photographable coastal fishing village in all of Spain . There is no Instagrammer who can resist taking a photo of its streets, and I’m not surprised because it’s beautiful! It’s super clean, well-kept and surrounded by the sea. What more could you ask for? But look for an alternative plan for that day because you’ll be there in no time.

We tied in Binibeca and our afternoon plan was another swim at the beach, in this case we went to Cala En Porter .

The whole environment itself was like a dream, it is slightly hidden between two mountains which are protected from the wind and therefore from the waves, when I say that Menorca is the paradise of paradises I am not just saying it, absolutely NOTHING to envy the Caribbean, or looking at the photos don’t you think the same as me…?

Cansados del viaje, los baños en las calas y el paseo por Binibeca, cuando llegamos al alojamiento en Cala Blanca, caímos rendidos en la cama, teníamos que reponer fuerzas, el día siguiente prometía…

DAY 2: CALA GALDANA, CALA MITJANA, CALA MITJANETA, ARTRUTX LIGHTHOUSE AND BARBECUE AT HOME

Galdana is perhaps the best-known beach on the island of Menorca , easy access, fine sand, turquoise waters with hardly any waves and a very family-friendly atmosphere. These are the characteristics that make it one of the most (or the most) visited.

The beaches in the south of Menorca are the most visited and therefore the most crowded with people. This was the main reason for traveling to Menorca in June. We did not want to find the island overcrowded with people and thanks to having chosen this week of vacation we were able to see all the beaches in their maximum splendor, half empty.

Cala Macarella , Cala Macarelleta , Cala En Turqueta , Cala Galdana and Cala Talaier are perhaps the best known on the island, all of them in the southern part and famous for their turquoise waters , white sand and the spectacular surroundings. However, the beaches in the north should not be underestimated, they certainly captivated me…

From Cala Galdana there are some stairs that go up the mountain which will be the start of the 30-minute walk to Cala Mitjana and Cala Mitjaneta (next to each other). Here luck was not on our side, it was full of seaweed to the point that you could hardly swim.

We took a dip as best we could and retraced our steps back to Cala Galdana where we had found a picnic table right on the beach. We had a delicious picnic under the pine trees with Galdana in the background, no words

In the afternoon the plan was to visit one of the most legendary lighthouses in Menorca , the Artrutx lighthouse . Although there is a restaurant that has “taken over” part of the lighthouse and if you don’t eat there you can’t get in, around the lighthouse there is the typical lunar-like rock that does allow you to see the whole area , even on clear days you can see Mallorca perfectly.

In the evening we had a barbecue at home so that the Vikings could enjoy the house and regain their strength for the next day…

DAY 3: BINIMEL-LA BEACH, CALA PREGONDA, FORNELLS, ARENAL DE SON SAURA AND PONT D´EN GIL

Access to the beaches in the north of Menorca is nothing like access to the beaches in the south. The walks you have to take from where you park your car to the beach are IMPORTANT, some like Pregonda even take more than 1 hour on foot. The area and the surroundings are completely virgin, there is no hotel or anything, nothing, zero apartments, zero beach bars and there is nothing that is not in its natural state, this is what makes Menorca a true jewel.

Since the island of Menorca was recognized as a Biosphere Reserve in 1993 , every aspect of the island has been carefully looked after. In fact, the northern area is one of the most natural and spectacular landscapes I have ever seen. Go prepared with water and good footwear and just enjoy a virgin environment in its purest state.

As in all trips there is time for everything, in this case we made a more than obligatory visit to the beautiful coastal town of Fornells , with shops of all kinds, beautiful houses and a lot of gastronomic offer, this was where we made our stop to eat.

At sunset we went to Pont D’En Gil to watch the sun set in one of the most beautiful places, but at the same time one that was packed with people. Being in the Ciutadella is like a kind of pilgrimage to Mecca… people wherever you look, however, a must-see to see the sunset.

I hope you have enjoyed all the places, coves and villages we have visited so far. Don’t miss the second part of our trip to Menorca with children in this post.
