Visiting Ávila and Segovia with children

Visiting Segovia with children

Our trip through Asturias was coming to an end. We had some very intense days in the northern areas , the route to the Brañas de La Pornacal , the crazy day we had at  the lakes of Saliencia , the day we went to the coast of  Gijón, Luanco, Cabo Peñas , the improvised excursion to  The Path of the Bear … non-stop!

The trip from Asturias to Valencia is quite long , 8 and a half hours by car , and even if you make stops, to do it with two children is a bit heavy , so we decided to stop right halfway before reaching Valencia , and we spent the night in Ávila , we didn’t know it, so it was the perfect excuse to do some city tourism , which although it is not what we are most passionate about (I mean city tourism), what we were passionate about was the city of Ávila itself, beautiful!

And you might say, isn’t that cover photo the Segovia Núria Aqueduct? Yes, it is, another city we were really looking forward to, Segovia , so we killed two birds with one stone, we also visited Segovia before heading home , they are less than an hour from one city to the other , a piece of cake !

We slept in Ávila , in a beautiful , traditional hotel called Las Cancelas , wonderful! Everything was decorated in a Castilian style that gave the impression that the Catholic Monarchs were going to come down to the dining room at some point hahaha…  very carefully designed, and with impressive views of the Ávila Cathedral.

I have to make a special mention of the Castellana soup we had for dinner, the most delicious soup I have ever tasted in my life!, at the El Portalón restaurant, in the Plaza del Mercado Chico , in the old part of the city.

That day we got up super early, we had to visit two cities before returning to Valencia , the distance from Segovia to Valencia is about 4 hours , although we were in no hurry, we were on vacation, so it was the same for us to arrive in Valencia at night, which is what happened to us, being so early, we had time to see the most famous parts of the city of Ávila , with hardly any people, but with a bit of a cool morning breeze.

We took a walk around the entire old town of Ávila , and saw the famous wall from different points . We loved how clean, well-kept, welcoming and medieval-style the entire city is . The entire old town preserves the original cobblestones from that time , the locals were all very nice, and both sleeping and eating were at more than affordable prices for being the middle of August. We loved it!

We had a small mid-morning snack in Ávila , and said goodbye to the city to say hello to Segovia , where we headed straight to lunch.

We were very lucky because we found a parking space very close to the famous Aqueduct . We moved away from the hustle and bustle to eat. The price difference between the menus was mind-blowing once you got a few blocks away from the Aqueduct . However, we were unable to enjoy the delicious choto that the 4 of us ordered together sitting at the table, because little Batusito decided that in the middle of the meal he was going to cause a stir , throwing a tantrum that would make history…

So I ate first, and when I had swallowed, I stood up so that PAPArracho could do it . The little one was unruly, he screamed, he cried, if you picked him up he would hit you, bite you, pinch you… back to the stroller, and then we went for a walk around the area, under the watchful eyes of the tourists and the people we passed. Such screams were no wonder, kids, what can I tell you…

Once the situation was under control and everyone was calm, we walked around the city. How beautiful it is! I already knew it, I had been there many years ago with my family, but it doesn’t matter how many times you visit it. The Aqueduct is imposing , and how! Its streets are beautiful, it is a welcoming, pretty and well-kept city. The Alcazar is wonderful, although I would probably say that it is very hot in August.
