FAMILY TRAVEL

holidays on the Costa Brava, summer

Here we go with the second part of our family vacation on the Costa Brava this summer 2021 , as I said in the previous post, we were really, really looking forward to this family vacation , a lockdown, mobility restrictions, perimeter confinement, social prohibitions … what am I going to tell you that you don’t know, so we escaped for 10 days along the spectacular and wonderful Costa Brava, in Girona.
The first 5 days around the Cap de Creus you can see them here , we explored the wildest and most unspoiled area , and the next 5 days we went down from La Escala, Tamariu, Begur, San Antonio de Calonge, Palamós, Palafrugell … a beautiful area full of coves and dream beaches, so without further ado … let’s go!

ACCOMMODATION IN A SPECTACULAR VILLA, IN CALONGE

We looked for accommodation that was more or less in the middle of the other towns and coves we wanted to visit, and this was Calonge . From there we moved on to some dreamy coves. The villa was a great chalet located on a mountain with a private pool, barbecue, rooms with sea views, and only about 5 kilometres from the beach of San Antonio de Calonge , next to Palamós .

In both accommodations we had a pool , this is something we always look for when we go on holiday in summer with children , and it is a must: the pool .
And I have to say that on this trip, thank goodness we had one! The Viking (who is a mermaid-level aquatic person) didn’t want to swim in the sea of the Costa Brava practically any day. The first few days on the beach of Canyelles Petites  in Roses he did swim, but in this second part of the trip he went on a salt water strike, and said that your aunt should swim.
Several factors influenced this. We are from Valencia and in Valencia the water is, as some say, “caldito” (hot water) . It is at the perfect temperature and you can stay in the water for hours and hours without wanting to get out because you are not cold. In addition, you have to go in very deep for it to cover you. On the Costa Brava it is just the opposite. The water is cold and after taking two steps it almost covers you up to your neck.

PARADISIACAL COVES AND BEACHES ON THE COSTA BRAVA, IN GIRONA

Next to our accommodation, about 15 minutes by car, we had Tamariu beach . It was the day when we found the most people on the beach, it was the San Juan long weekend and also a Saturday, although it was not an impediment to fully enjoy its crystal-clear waters and its seabed.

One afternoon we went to explore the area of Cala Xélida and its surroundings. We had heard wonderful things about this cove and with good reason! We took a short walk along the famous Camí de Ronda , which runs along the entire coastal area of the Costa Brava . Some stretches are more complicated than others and take you through spectacular mountains and cliffs. We took a short, easy stretch, but with dreamlike views and landscapes…

CALA MARQUESA, COSTA BRAVA

And we come to the jewel in the crown , one of my favorite beaches of the entire trip along with Cala Rostella in Cap de Creus , Cala d´aigua Xélida is simply beastly , the surroundings, the color of its waters, how wild it is and where it is located right on the cliff of a mountain and from which spring water comes out of the mountain, make it brutal.
Cala Xélida is small, just over 20 meters long , with areas of stones and areas of sand (very little), the access is quite steep with comfortable stairs to reach the cove easily , I understand that in the summer months like July and August or you go before 9 in the morning or it is impossible to access it for swimming, since being small it fills up in zero-point.

Once again, either because of the time (around 8pm) or because it was the end of June, we found the cove completely empty . We enjoyed it, seeing it in all its splendour. We sat down to simply watch it, feel it, enjoy the silence, its gentle waves breaking on the shore. We took some photos and continued our route along the Camí de Ronda , between cliffs and brutal landscapes.

ROUND ROAD, COSTA BRAVA

AIGUABLAVA BEACH, IN BEGUR, COSTA BRAVA

And yet another cove! In this case we went to see Playa Aiguablava, in Begur . It is a perfect beach and very comfortable to enjoy with the family , it is all sand , wide and with parking (for a fee, of course), it also has many bars and restaurants, a rocky area where we had a great time with the porter. Be careful! It is a beach that, like Cala Xélida , gets packed to the rafters, so it is advisable to go early otherwise you won’t get a spot.
We saw a lot of crabs and a sea urchin , which my Viking pulled out of the sea to everyone’s surprise and dared (very carefully so as not to prick himself) to pick it up with his hands, needless to say that afterwards we returned it to its natural habitat, the sea.

CALELLA DE PALAFRUGELL, COSTA BRAVA

So many days of vacation give you a lot to see and discover, something that I really like (although my Vikings say it is super boring) is to visit the coastal villages, in this case we went for a walk and visited Calella de Palagrugell, in Palafrugell.
I really liked it, white streets, everything very well kept and with a great variety of gastronomy, many bars and restaurants that look out to sea and where it is almost obligatory to order some tellinas to enjoy them at sunset looking at the sea.

SNORKELING ON THE COSTA BRAVA

This is something I TOTALLY recommend , it is getting to know the seabed of the Costa Brava, which is simply brutal.
Although I may not have enjoyed it 100% because the water is so cold, but I did have moments where I said, “I’m going to the river if I’m going to do it!”, and I was snorkelling with my warrior Batusi , who is slowly getting started in this hobby  of snorkelling and which we like and are so passionate about. I recommend that if you go on holiday you take some good goggles , some booties , an underwater camera (and a wetsuit if you can) and enjoy the seabed , it’s amazing no matter which cove or beach you go to, although if I had to choose a specific area I would choose the coves of Cap de Creus. And with these two posts we would have finished our holidays on the Costa Brava this year 2021 , it has been difficult to summarize 10 days of NON STOP family vacation in two posts, I could have taken out up to 5 articles ha ha ha … I look forward to your impressions in the comments, questions or suggestions about these days, you can take a look at our first FAMILY HOLIDAY ON THE COSTA BRAVA IN CAP DE CREUS , where we got to know the cape from end to end (excuse the redundancy jijijij), Monastery of San Pere de Rodes , Els Aiguamolls de L’empordá … without a doubt a trip that we will never forget. You can also follow our adventures on social networks , where I am very active especially on INSTAGRAM STORIES , you can follow me on @mamirrachadas I’ll see you there!
