FAMILY TRAVEL

New Year’s Eve in Calaceite and Valderrobres with the family, Teruel is great

This New Year’s Eve we spent it in a different way than we had done in previous years, we went to spend a few days in the freezing province of Teruel , specifically in Calaceite, Valderrobres , and its beautiful surrounding towns, because although I imagine you you already know, it doesn’t matter what time of year you go, how cold it is, how rainy or foggy it is, Teruel is always cool !

We rented an apartment that ended up being a super mansion for us alone, right in the center of the town, a beautiful town called Calaceite and with a special charm, it was very, VERY cold, we were every day at a temperature below zero , and with a super dense fog most days, but it was not an impediment for us to enjoy the end of the year with a well-deserved disconnection in the mountains, and visiting the beautiful little towns that Teruel offers.

As I was saying, our accommodation was in Calaceite . I’m leaving a map below so you can locate it on the map, because it’s in Teruel , but very close to Tarragona  and Castellón .
The town is charming and wonderful. The first day we arrived we spent our time visiting it and getting to know its streets thoroughly. It has some lovely little streets, as well as some spectacular arches that make it one of the prettiest towns in the area. The people who recommended us to visit it are right! Near Calaceite, there are several towns that are worth visiting, such as Cretas, or Valderrobres, the latter considered one of the prettiest towns in Spain.

We ate the grapes in a bit of madness that we will certainly never forget. We were waiting for the bells to ring with the bells from the village bell tower that was right in front of our house, but they were joined at the same time by a fireworks display that exploded with each bell ring. We were waiting for the bells to ring and the exploding firecrackers created a bit of confusion. The thing is that when we realized, it was already the sixth bell ring, Batusi was scared by the firecrackers, the Viking was throwing the grapes on the ground, and the father and I were laughing our heads off at the situation, all this with a temperature of -2º below zero, freezing cold, in short, it was all very crazy…

This lady was waiting for us at the door of our accommodation. As you can see, our house was not small… we rented an apartment that covered an entire floor, like a flat, but there was no one else staying on the other 2 floors in the house, so we roamed freely around the common areas. It was wonderful! A beautiful and super cosy house.

Wood, sturdy stones, spectacular restored rustic furniture, clay floor… a super nice house, we had a balcony overlooking the street, a small kitchen with all the necessary utensils for daily cooking, and where we made a delicious New Year’s Eve dinner, two bedrooms, a bathroom and a living-dining room with a very homely touch.

The door on the left was our accommodation in Calaceite.

In the morning on New Year’s Day we woke up like this, with a super thick fog that barely let us see the houses in front of us, we had a quiet breakfast with the family and went to visit an uninhabited Iberian village that was less than a kilometer from Calaceite, the appearance and the day could not have been more gloomy, there was a super dense and super thick fog that made everything seem like a horror movie, not to mention how cold it was, the degrees below zero never abandoned us at any time.

We were also able to see for the first time in our lives a hoarfrost, or in other words, the fog that freezes, you can see it in detail in some photos that I took with my new mobile phone, the cover photo, or a little further down, it looks like snow, but no, we were fascinated to see this beautiful natural phenomenon, in Valencia we do not have this type of atmospheric phenomena because it is a warm climate, it is like when it snows, we Valencians go crazy!

After visiting the deserted Iberian village we headed towards Valderrobres, which as I said above is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, and rightly so! BEAUTIFUL, a marvel to walk through its cobbled streets and through the streets where the balconies almost collide with each other due to their narrowness. Entering a medieval era is not enough, you get the feeling as you get to know its corners that you are like in a film set in the Middle Ages.

A beautiful bridge welcomes you to the town, all cobbled and with spectacular views of the town. It is one of the places (if not the most) photographic point in Valderrobres. We had to wait for it to clear up a bit to take some family photos of the 4 of us (sorry, these will remain in our private family album :). A calm river runs below, leaving a reflection of the houses that overlook it.

We walked around the streets all day long, we ate in one of the very few bars that were open (we forgot it was New Year’s Eve…), we were lucky enough to find a place and eat some Roman-style calamari and a spectacular steak that I’m still licking my lips just thinking about…

After Valderrobres we had time to see some of the towns in the area such as Cretas . Make sure you visit as much of the area as you can, it’s all beautiful! This concludes our trip through Aragonese lands. Oh! And very close to all these towns you have Beceite and its famous Parrizal route, where we were a few years ago doing part of the route. You can see here the post I made with recommendations for going with children to do the Parrizal route.

I look forward to your opinions in the comments!
